Dancing with the Elephant: Define Your Win

Danny, love the Dancing with the Elephant series you put together! Big help for anyone doing planning both church and non-church events. Wanted to help contribute to your questions to ask when defining the win:

What does flow look/feel like for the event?
Flow rate or through-put of attendee’s can make/break all the great planning/execution efforts. Take time to physically grab a few folks weeks in advance and walk the flow of traffic and shoot holes through the plan to determine worst case scenario’s should they arise.

Ask leadership, what does the big win’s look like?
It’s all about reverse engineering. Is it Baptism experience (either quantifiable or simply experiential)? Is it all about the entrance/exit (folks feel warm n fuzzy entering and leaving). Just start with the end result on the board first, work backwards to asking what existing systems/processes are in place? Finally, once discussions have answered that, what does good look like around desired behaviors to achieve? The end should be: Behaviors + Processes = Results (B+P=R)

Are we inviting folks to contribute their unique ideas in service of God’s best? Present rough drafts to leaders, high-capacity volunteers, and ask them to shoot holes through everything. Contingency plans, the “what if” scenario’s, etc. This is not inviting the vision (or the what) to be negotiated, but rather inviting folks for the tactical (the how) to be incorporated. Game-changer for morale, buy-in, and mutually beneficial outcomes.

The more leadership strategically invites folks to contribute their unique ideas in service of the heart, soul, and vision of the House, God will always show up and do the rest!
