Top Ten Quotes: The Hospitable Leader

If you’re a regular reader of ye olde blogge, you are likely in a role (paid or volunteer) that focuses on hospitality. But while we can be really good at creating hospitable environments for our guests, how adept are we at hospitality towards those who are already a part of our team?

In The Hospitable Leader: Create Environments Where People and Dreams Flourish, Pastor Terry Smith unpacks the answers to that question. I really enjoyed this book when I read it a few years back, and I think you will, too.

Here are my top ten favorite quotes:

  • Hospitable leaders view life and leadership through the lens of hospitality.
  • The most successful leader in the history of the world led in a context of hospitality. Jesus often used – or created – hospitable environments to welcome people to himself and employ them in His mission.
  • A hospitable leader creates home wherever he or she is.
  • Welcoming the stranger isn’t a nicety – it’s a necessity.
  • Like any good leader, [Paul] dreamed more for Timothy than Timothy had even dreamed for himself.
  • When we really listen we genuinely seek to understand another person. We want to comprehend their thoughts, feelings, experiences, and point of view. We want to see what they see, whether we agree with them or not.
  • A leader does not dictate answers, but rather creates an environment where people can work together toward answers.
  • …we have not been successful unless we know we have been accurately heard, and that we only know we have been accurately heard when we hear back.
  • Leaders have disproportionate power – and the obligation – to cause the condition of shalom.
  • Enjoying the feast of life is part of holiness.
