The 10 Commandments for a Fresh Fall Season

I don’t know about your church staff, but on ours, summertime has come to a screeching halt. Student camps are over. Vacation Bible School is in the books. Vacations are a distant memory. And the gogogo of fall has begun.

With the gogogo comes a lot of excitement and anticipation. But when we get lost in the weeds and forget our fellow gardeners, staff and volunteer culture can go sideways quickly.

That’s why I was grateful for the following “Ten Commandments for Fall,” shared with our team last week by Curtis Andrusko. If you don’t know Curtis, he’s one of our teaching pastors, my boss, and a guy with a beard decidedly better than Charlton Heston’s on Sinai.

Curtis’ list serves as a reminder to all of us that God’s work in us is more important than the work we create around us. I’m happy to share it with you without further commentary:

This fall, thou shalt…

  • …not use “us” or “them” (only “we”)
  • …build bridges, not burn them
  • …find my identity in Jesus, not my job
  • …be a thermostat, not a thermometer
  • …steward by multiplying, not maintaining
  • …contribute before complaining
  • …celebrate before critiquing
  • …seek to understand before casting judgment
  • …honor people over production
  • …protect margin for the sake of the mission
