Top Ten Quotes: Likable Leader
Almost ten years ago I heard my friend Jason Young give a talk titled “Are you likable?” Few presentations have impacted me as much as that one, and I was thrilled when he took that talk and expanded it into a book. Likable Leader: Becoming a Leader People Love to Follow proved to be the truer and better version of that talk. It was one of my favorite summertime reads this year, and you need to pick up a copy.
Here are my top ten favorite quotes:
- You don’t have to be nice to be likable. At the same time, being nice doesn’t mean you’ll be likable.
- As a leader, consistency helps build trust. And trust is one of the foundations of likability.
- People tend to move in the direction of our praise.
- Here’s the truth about the way many people lead: they value speed over destination.
- When we manufacture movement that doesn’t support the true vision, we ignore backward progress.
- When people feel protected by their leader, they like their leader.
- One important thing to note about humility; it repels arrogance.
- [Availability] means more than just having an open-door policy. It’s possible to have an open door but a closed calendar.
- Special moments shouldn’t be mandatory, and they shouldn’t be something that asks too much of your people. It should be something where people can just receive.
- If you want to be a likable leader for the long haul … you need to respond correctly when the fires rage in life. These fires can either refine your influence as a leader or eat away at it.
