Top Ten Quotes: The Discipline of Grace

Almost two decades ago, I stumbled across a book called The Discipline of Grace: God’s Role and Our Role in the Pursuit of Holiness. That book was – as the kids say – a game changer.

Editor’s note: do the kids still say that? Discuss.

The Discipline of Grace was my gateway to other books by the late Jerry Bridges through the years, but I recently returned to my original find for a second deep dive, and I found it to be even more compelling this time around.

Here are my top ten favorite quotes:

  • …the pursuit of holiness must be anchored in the grace of God.
  • We should always view ourselves both in terms of what we are in Christ, that is, saints, and what we are in ourselves, namely, sinners.
  • [W]e must by faith bring the verdict of conscience into line with the verdict of Heaven.
  • [O]ur sin is a burden that afflicts us rather than a pleasure that delights us.
  • In justification we rely on what Christ did for us on the cross. In sanctification we rely on Christ to work in us by His Holy Spirit.
  • Because we sin every day, and our consciences condemn us every day, we need the gospel every day.
  • [Spiritual] disciplines are not the source of our spiritual strength. The Lord Jesus Christ is, and it is the ministry of the Holy Spirit to apply His strength in our lives.
  • Undoubtedly, one of the reasons God allows us to fall before temptation so often is to teach us experientially that we really are dependent on Him to enable us to grow in holiness.
  • So the commitment to holiness must be a decisive commitment that is continually reaffirmed.
  • We become more holy by obedience to the Word of God, by choosing to obey His will as revealed in the Scriptures in all the various circumstances of our lives.
