Top Ten Quotes: The Green Letters
We all know the definition of a literary classic: a book that everyone has heard of but no one has read. In the case of The Green Letters: Principles of Spiritual Growth by Miles Stanford, I had neither heard of it or read it, but when a friend put it in my hands a few months ago, the cover screamed “classic” and the content backed it up.
The Green Letters is a short book that you can read quickly, but you won’t want to. It’s packed full of quotes attributed to other authors, so it is a bit more of a threaded compilation than it is a fresh take on the spiritual disciplines. Still, I found it to be very helpful and encouraging.
Here are my top ten favorite quotes:
- Unless our faith is established upon facts, it is no more than conjecture, superstition, speculation, or presumption.
- To taste of the grace of God is one thing; to be established in it and manifest it in character, habit, and regular life, is another. (George Goodman)
- Grace, once bestowed, is not withdrawn: for God knew all the human exigencies beforehand; His action was independent of them, not dependent upon them. (William R. Newell)
- Those who have the deepest appreciation of grace do not continue in sin. Moreover, fear produces the obedience of slaves; love engenders the obedience of sons. (J.W. Sanderson, Jr.)
- Don’t try to be like Him. Just look at Him. (Norman Douty)
- When you fight to get victory, then you have lost the battle at the very outset.
- The blood can wash away my sins, but it cannot wash away my old man: I need the cross to crucify me – the sinner. (Watchman Nee)
- There are many “separated from the world” Christians who are not “separated from themselves” Christians.
- Immaturity considers the Lord Jesus a Helper. Maturity knows Him to be Life itself.
- As our Lord takes us along through the years it slowly dawns upon us that there are vast, almost infinite, areas of development through which He must still lead us.
