Why You … Yeah, You … Are Your Church’s Best Culture-Builder

The last decade or so has seen a lot of ink spilled on the topic of culture. We have healthy cultures and toxic cultures. Robust cultures and anemic cultures. Organizational culture, volunteer culture, and staff culture. The discussion of culture has become a culture unto itself.

A quick scan of my personal library reveals no fewer than 20 titles or subtitles containing the word culture. Even on this website, I stopped counting at 50 titles with the word “culture” in the title of the post.

Whether that word has become overused or not, culture is a thing, and it’s important. Even in a church. Especially in a church.

This year we’re dedicating a monthly series to the question of hospitable culture. And if you live in the guest services space as a staff member, a volunteer, or just an astute observer, I would argue that you are your church’s best culture-builder.

Think about it. In your church, which ministry is tasked with:

  • Creating hospitable environments?
  • Caring for all people who walk through the doors?
  • Moving people from connected to committed to commisioned?

If I’m guessing correctly, it’s the very ministry where you serve. It’s the Hospitality Team. The First Impressions Team. The Guest Services Team. The Whatever-You-Call-It Team.

So the question you must ask is no longer, “Who is going to build the hospitable culture of our church?” The question is now “Why not me?”

Start the conversation.
